You are allowed to take courses outside the department, as long as the majority of your courses in any given semester have an LIN designator. In the past, PhD students have taken courses in Computer Science (CSE), Applied Math (AMS), Sociology (SOC), Psychology (PSY), Journalism (JRN), and Graduate Development (GRD), among others. Unless the course is explicitly aimed at students across campus, you should reach out to the instructor at least two weeks before the semester in order to get their permission to enroll.
